“Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!” sings the emcee of the Kit Kat Club through painted lips as the people of 1929 Berlin join in. Whatever your troubles, you will forget them at the Cabaret. Set at the dawn of Hitler's rise to power, the growing influence of the Nazi regime is viewed through the eyes of a young American writer whose love affair with one of the show's dancers becomes increasingly threatened. The tumultuous political atmosphere and seedy decadence of the time is revealed through songs such as “It Couldn't Please Me,” “Cabaret,” and “Don't Tell Mama.”
